The Facility

Erowal, located in Maleny, is an aged care facility operated by Blue Care, a part of the Uniting Church of Australia. Its picturesque grounds also contains several independent-living villas.

The 82 residents are accommodated in 7 lodges which provide a variety of care options. At the time of writing, September 2014, 23 of these residents are either ex-service personnel or DVA widows.

Visiting Criteria

Prior to commencement as a volunteer, certain requirements have to be fulfilled. These include the provision of:

  • personal details,
  • answering both written and oral questionnaires,
  • authorizing a police check (every 3 years), and
  • demonstrating the ability to maintain a high level of hygiene.

Once these provisions have been satisfactorily achieved, a Blue Care photographic ID is issued. To retain this ID, and continue as a volunteer, a yearly training day is conducted. Attendance is compulsory.

Currently there are about 45 volunteers who provide a variety of services. These include assistance with the garden club, library, cleaning, maintenance, and remedial therapies.

RSL PAWS Team

From June 2009, there has been full time PAWS representation by the RSL.  The PAWS Representative for the RSL Maleny Sub Branch conducts regular visits.

Apart from ‘One-on-One’ visiting, our PAWS Representative assists with other Erowal activities which include art and painting classes, choir, church, board games, and some manual tasks as requested.

The RSL is also represented on special occasions. These celebrations include Australia Day, Mother’s and Father’s Days, NRL Footy Finals luncheon, the Melbourne Cup and annual Christmas party.

Ceremonial

ANZAC and Remembrance Days are held each year and are conducted in accordance with the established  guidelines of our RSL.   All services are assisted by mounted and dismounted members of Maleny’s 5th Light Horse Troop.  These two services are well attended and the horses bring back fond memories for many of the residents.

Conclusion

Erowal is a high-standard and caring facility, located within a beautiful country environment.  It enjoys a deservedly good reputation in the community.

It is a pleasure for the PAWS team to represent the RSL Maleny Sub Branch during our visits.  After all, the residents are the heritage of both this community, and our great nation of Australia.
